34° North Restaurant named Ocean Friendly Establishment
An Ocean Friendly Establishment is a business that voluntarily makes environmentally friendly business decisions, primarily reducing the use of single-use plastics. In coastal North Carolina, many establishments take pride in protecting the environment recognizing that a healthy coast is why we choose to live in and visit the area.
Both 34° North Restaurant and the Beaufort Hotel NC, an Ascend Hotel Collection Member, are the newest additions to the growing list of Ocean Friendly Establishments.
Ocean Friendly Establishments was started by an organization called Plastic Ocean Project of Wilmington. The movement has been gaining momentum and reaching beyond Wilmington. Crystal Coast Waterkeeper has partnered with Plastic Ocean Project, becoming the local sponsor for Ocean Friendly Establishments on the Crystal Coast.
In an effort to reduce plastic pollution, owners and managers of certified Ocean Friendly Establishments have agreed to only serve straws upon request. This is a self-regulated initiative, and restaurants are encouraged to ensure waitstaff are educated and adhering to the initiative.
Many Ocean Friendly Establishments go above and beyond just straws, and they are awarded with a rating of up to 5 stars for their efforts. This includes avoiding Styrofoam and plastic bags, offering vegetarian/vegan meal options, proper recycling, and more!
34° North Restaurant has received the highest rating possible due to their successful designation as a green restaurant through the North Carolina GreenTravel Initiative.
34° North Restaurant recently became Eastern North Carolina’s first full-service green restaurant.
The aim is to promote the businesses who are already doing the right thing and encourage others to follow suit. When more businesses commit to reducing plastic, it protects our water quality and saves marine lives. It will also increase demand for other options, ultimately making alternatives more and more affordable!More about Plastic
